Charge Capture
What is Charge Capture?
Charge Capture is the process of translating every billable service and supply rendered to a patient into a documented charge on the organization's financial record. It is the foundation of the mid-cycle, ensuring that the services documented in the EHR/EMR are accurately converted into financial charges.
If a service is provided but not charged, it is considered Revenue Leakage. Accurate charge capture relies heavily on complete Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI).
Why Charge Capture is Critical for CFOs and Financial Leaders
Charge capture directly determines maximum gross revenue, making it a critical process for revenue integrity.
- Maximizing Revenue Integrity: Failures in charge capture (missed charges) are a direct cause of lost revenue that can never be recovered. Automated systems ensure every billable service is accounted for.
- Reducing Charge Lag: Charge Lag is the time between when a service is rendered and when the charge is entered and ready for billing. Delays increase Days in A/R. Automation reduces lag by eliminating manual entry and streamlining the data flow from the EHR.
Key Use Cases: How Automation Solves Charge Capture Errors
RCM Automation uses intelligence to bridge the gap between clinical documentation and financial charging.
- AI/ML Cross-Referencing: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning can cross-reference appointment schedules, procedure logs, and documentation to ensure every billable service is accounted for and accurately supported.
- Automated Reconciliation: The RCM platform automatically checks the coded charges against the documented service, flagging discrepancies before the claim is submitted.
Charge Capture vs. Medical Coding
These terms are sequential and dependent mid-cycle processes:
- Charge Capture is ensuring that a financial charge is created for the service.
- Medical Coding is assigning the standardized ICD-10 and CPT codes to that charge based on the patient's condition and the documentation.
